In the fall of the 2007 - 2008 school year Promontory Elementary partnered with the BCAA Traffic Safety Council and the Chilliwack RCMP to introduce a crossing guard program. Responsible Grade 5 & 6 students were trained (working in groups of three) to act as crossing guards to help students and families cross the street safely on the Stoneview crosswalk. Students who were crossing guards needed to:

a. Arrive at school on their assigned days at 8:05 a.m. and act as a crossing from 8:10 until 8:25 a.m. For the afternoon students leave class at 2:10 p.m. and will acted as a crossing guard until 2:30 p.m.

b. Each Trio of crossing guards worked two shifts per week one in a morning and one after school.

c. A trainer comes to our school to train all of our crossing guards in correct procedures and traffic safety. All crossing guards are equipped with reflective vests, stop signs and whistles. No student was allowed to work as a crossing guard until they had been trained.

We are hoping to expand this program to include the crosswalk at the corner of Tesky in the 2008 - 2009 school year. For further information on our crossing guard program please contact Mr. Gemmell.
