Our library is entering its tenth year, and we think it's great!
Philosophy:
The purpose
of our school library program is to facilitate literacy and love of learning,
by providing a rich environment with a variety of resources and opportunities
for students to research and enjoy literacy experiences. The library will
be a learning resource centre where teachers, students and teacher librarian
can work in partnership.
Hours
of Operation:
We are
open every weekday morning at 8:10 am and after school until 2:45 pm. We
are also open at lunch time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Book
Exchange:
Every class
has an assigned book exchange time once each week. Primary students are
allowed to take out 1 book or magazine at a time; intermediates are allowed
2. Students in grade 3 begin signing out 2 items in February, once they
have completed their library training. Items are due back in 1 week, but
students can sign out items any day during the flexible exchange time from
8:30 - 8:45 in the morning, after recess 10:45 - 11:15 am, and after lunch
12:45 - 1:15 pm.
Programs
and Events:
We have a number of programs
that we are particularily proud of:
Pro Home Reading Club:
We will begin this year on September 12 with our home reading club. Students who join the club need to keep track of the nights that they read for 10 minutes or longer and submit their log sheets when they have read 25 nights. We have a big celebration assembly in January, April, and again in June. Our club is sponsored by the Sardis Kiwanis Club & McDonalds - who provide the major incentives at 100 and again at 250 nights of reading. We are also sponsored by Burger King and Subway, who provide meal certificates.

Scholastic Book Fairs
This year we will be hosting two book fairs in December and June.
One year our bookfair theme was "Going on a safari"
Red Cedar Book Awards:
This year our club will meet officially on Fridays starting late January. Students that sign up to participate have until April to read and make their choice for award winners. We will submit our vote by mid April, and the final results will be made known to the world by the end of May! The Red Cedar awards are given to the top Canadian authors chosen by British Columbian children.

After 10 years of Battle of the Books this year the district librarians have decided to try something new! Schools will participate in a book celebration which will include plays depicting favourite books read, posters, books reviews, rapid fire questions, character interviews and more.
