Linux@Home Introduction
One of the nice things about Promontory using Linux, is that students can use their computer account at home as if they were working on a computer at school. This is a (fairly simple) process known as "computer virtualization" and will be covered in the steps below. We are assuming that you are using a fairly modern computer (purchased in the last 5 years) and it has a good internet connection. If you follow the steps below you should be up and running in this process in no time.
Step #1: Software Download
Step#2: Software Set-up
Ok so you have downloaded and installed the NX ThinClient software and now you wish to set it up. For complete set-up instructions and troubleshooting
download the NX How To document right here.
• As a quick start this is how you get going. You will need to run the NX Connection Wizard and create a new session (Fig1). Give the session the name "Promontory" and the host IP number is "142.30.37.246". Click on the next-> button
(Fig1)
• The next section will ask you to setup your software for NX ThinClient. Enter the information from Fig. 2 in this box and click the next-> button.
(Fig2)
• Click the finish button (Fig 3) and you are ready to try to login.
(Fig3)
Step#3: Log-On
• Click on NX ThinClient and at the main login window enter your first name followed by the underscore "_" followed by your last name. Enter your child's password and click on the "login" button (Fig 4). This should get you into Linux.
(Fig4)
Step#4: Trouble Shooting
• Click on the NX Client icon to load the software (if you have not done so). This will pull up the "No Machine" box (Figure 4). Click on the button that says "Configure..."
(Fig4)
• Select the "General" tab at the top of the window and configure the set-up for your computer similar to the diagram below (Figure 5). The Host (IP number) is 142.30.37.246. Click "OK" will take you back to the Login-in window.
(Fig 5)
• At the main login window enter your first name followed by the underscore "_" followed by your last name. Enter your child's password and click on the "login" button.
